Stalagmites - Edition of 50

£15.00

This book tells the story of the making of an artwork using clay, pigment, indigo ink, plaster, glue, words, ideas, dust, minerals, stones, soils and dreams.

Focused on the performative aspect of making, on materials, and on the idea of inter-connectivity of things, Stalagmites explores the cycles of making and the slow building of things.

I wrote the texts presented in this volume, in the studio, while making the work. The texts follow chronologically the everyday process of making as well as the ideas born through the act of making / writing. The texts range from practical recipes to poetic or abstract stories. Most have lost their punctuation to allow them to flow freely at their own pace.

In Stalagmites, things and ideas appear, disappear, absorb, digest. The individual layers of matter and experience are porous and inter-connected. Everything interpenetrates everything. Everything repeats itself. Everything evolves quietly or with a sound. Everything is moving, at its own pace. And ultimately, everything is tied to the cycles of nature.

Like a cave or like two swans swimming on the sea, Stalagmites is an open-ended, multilayered story enriched by the everyday experience of looking, making, writing, waiting, and listening. It can be told with words or without. It is in flux, free and tied at the same time. Stalagmites is a cycle. It is soil. It is skin and bone. It is a living body.
